Yoga Sutra 1.9 for the modern world

When knowledge is gained through just words and no evidence, this is the imagination. This Sutra teaches us of the risks involved with just hearing words with no evidence. The mind has to imagine what is being spoken about and this could be quite far from the truth. Imagination when used knowingly and positively can cause new thoughts and ideas to be developed but these then must be concreted with evidence. If the mind is allowed to wander unchecked then the person lives in a state of unreality and disconnect. This reminds us to research the possibilities of what our dreams and imaginations can actually do before they turn into something that can’t actually be substantiated. It also reminds us that every thought we have is an imagination unless it is actually the experience we are having right now. So we shouldn’t get too absorbed in the thoughts as they are not the reality.
